Client: Sainsbury’s

Activity: A custom-made GPS Treasure Hunt (by Wildgoose)

Format: In-person, outdoor GPS environment, with an Onsite Host

Location: The Oval, London

Event date: 12 August 2026

On 12 August 2026, Wildgoose ran a custom-made London GPS Treasure Hunt for 500 Sainsbury’s suppliers and colleagues. The event raised £240,000 for Comic Relief, which Sainsbury’s matched pound for pound to bring the total to £480,000.

The Brief

Beth Shanahan, Sustainability Planning, Programme & Governance Manager at Sainsbury’s, and Britt Kleinig, Partnerships Executive at Sainsbury’s, got in touch with Wildgoose to help deliver a large-scale charity fundraising event for Comic Relief. The brief needed to:

  • Bring together a very large, mixed group of key suppliers and Sainsbury’s colleagues, with numbers expected to reach into the hundreds
  • Organise participants into 66 mixed teams of varying sizes, with up to 8 people per team, so suppliers and Sainsbury’s colleagues worked together rather than staying within their own company groups
  • Fit around a fixed afternoon slot at a single London venue, with an evening reception to follow
  • Stay flexible on duration as the final event schedule took shape
  • Work alongside Sainsbury’s own team, who were on hand to help with facilitation and scoring on the day

These constraints pointed towards a fully bespoke, outdoor GPS Treasure Hunt that could scale to 500 participants across 66 mixed teams, designed specifically around this one event rather than an off-the-shelf format.

The Solution: A Custom-Made GPS Treasure Hunt

Wildgoose delivered a custom-made GPS Treasure Hunt, designed specifically for the day, bringing suppliers and Sainsbury’s colleagues together in mixed teams for a route starting at The Oval and heading up into London’s West End before returning. To support the fundraiser, Wildgoose delivered the activity free of charge, waiving its normal fee of £10,250 plus VAT for a fully hosted, in-person event of this scale. With no Wildgoose event fee to deduct, more of the event’s proceeds could go to Comic Relief.

The Results

The challenge raised £240,000 for Comic Relief, which Sainsbury’s then matched pound for pound, taking the total raised on the day to £480,000.

Wildgoose organised a GPS challenge for nearly 500 people around central London. They were professional to work with from start to finish. Despite a heatwave, the challenge was so much fun. Participants enjoyed the variety and creativity of the tasks and found the app to be easy to use. Our host Dave brought the whole day to life and had everyone laughing during our debrief. Couldn’t recommend them enough for a corporate event.

Why It Worked

  • Organising 500 participants into 66 mixed teams, with up to 8 people in each, broke down the usual divide between individual supplier companies and Sainsbury’s own colleagues and gave people from different organisations a genuine reason to work together
  • Designing a custom-made activity around this specific event, rather than adapting an off-the-shelf format, meant the day was shaped entirely around Sainsbury’s brief from the outset
  • Waiving the normal £10,250 plus VAT event fee removed a significant event cost and demonstrated Wildgoose’s commitment to maximising the fundraiser’s contribution to Comic Relief
  • Routing teams from The Oval up into the West End and back by tube turned the journey itself into part of the challenge, rather than dead time either side of it
  • An Onsite Host and supporting team kept energy high throughout a long, hot afternoon and gave the debrief a memorable, personal touch
